How to Avoid Rental Scams When Searching for Student Housing

February 27, 2026

Rental scams are unfortunately common in major student markets, especially during peak leasing season. The good news: most scams follow predictable patterns, and a short verification process can protect you.

Treat any request for money before a viewing or a signed lease as a major red flag. Scammers often pressure students to send deposits quickly by claiming there are many other applicants. Legitimate housing providers will allow reasonable time for review and documentation.

Verify the listing and the person. For private rentals, confirm the address exists, cross-check photos (reverse image search helps), and ensure the landlord can show proof they have the right to rent the unit. For purpose-built communities, verify the official website, phone number, and physical office.

Be cautious with off-platform communication. Scammers often move conversations from reputable platforms to email or messaging apps and then send unofficial payment links. Pay only through traceable, legitimate methods outlined in a lease or official payment portal.

If you can't tour in person, request a live video walkthrough (not a pre-recorded video). Ask to see outside views, unit numbers, and building signage. Scammers can't improvise real-time proof.

When in doubt, choose housing with professional management and clear processes. The safest choice is the one that doesn't rely on urgency — it relies on transparency.
